Shimla was built by the British on land they had retained after the Gurkha War of 1814–16 and was used for resting troops. It gained popularity as a summer resort because of its cool climate and scenic setting, and from 1865 to 1939 it served as India’s summer capital. From 1947 to 1953 it was headquarters of Punjab state, until the new capital city of Chandigarh was completed.
Manali is a resort town situated in the mountains of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh near the northern end of the Kullu Valley in the Beas River Valley. It is located in the Kullu district and 544 km away from Delhi, the national capital.It is a popular tourist destination and serves as the gateway to Lahaul and Spiti district as well as Leh.
Manali is a cosmopolitan place where Tibetans, Ladakhi, Kashmiri, Kulluvi and Lahuli people reside. These people often came to do business at this place and slowly settled here. The main occupation of the local people is Tourism, farming, horticulture, handloom industry. The official language of Manali is Hindi but due to its development in tourism, the locals also understand the English language very well. In common parlance, the locals here use the Kulluvi dialect.
The climate in Manali is cold during winter and moderately cool during summer.
How to reach?
By Air
The nearest Airport Bhuntar Airport is at Bhuntar town, situated on NH21 about 50 km south of Manali and 10 km south of Kullu town. The airport is also known as Kullu-Manali Airport.
By Road
Manali is easily accessible by road Transport from Delhi, Chandigarh etc. This place is very well connected by road from all the major cities of Himachal Pradesh and other neighboring states.Privately operated bus service is also available within the state. Hired Taxi service is also available easily.
